Where to stay?
Ryokan is a Japanese style inn. Each guest room is simple in design, and floored with tatami "straw mat". The room has a low table and cushion. Futon is stored in a closet until the room maid lays it out on the tatami. Room rates per guest can range from 10,000 yen to 60,000 yen, not including tax and service charge.

Some hot-spring resorts have condominium apartments that can be rented.
Temples & shrines
A certain number of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples take in overnight guests at reasonable fees. Some of them are members of Japan Youth Hostel Association or Japanese Inn group.
Pensions feature a homelike atmosphere and hearty food - often French cuisine - and are found at popular resort areas throughout Japan. The typical pension has ten or so western-style rooms. Average room charge are 7,500 including two meals. Pensions can be an ideal choice of accommodation if you like indoor comfort as well as an array of outdoor recreational options.
Minshukuis a family inn operated by a family at their own homes. Rates are about 5,000 yen with two meals, served in family-style. There is no maid service and guests are expected to take care of setting their Futon.

Hotel occupancy in Japan tends to be very tight almost all year round, especially in Tokyo and Kyoto. It is secure to make a reservation before you travel.
